Silkolitt Lite External Wall Insulation from Alumasc Facades by K Rend has played a key role in the sustainable design of the award-winning Bletchley Leisure Centre.
Designed by Holder Mathias Architects, the new £21m centre includes state-of-the-art leisure facilities and is a vital part of Milton Keynes Council’s strategy for regenerating central Bletchley. The centre recently won the Bespoke Category in the BREEAM Awards which recognise and reward the design and construction of the highest scoring buildings certified under BREEAM.
From the outset, the council set the project a target BREEAM rating of Excellent and to achieve this increased insulation was required on the scheme. Consequently, Alumasc Facades by K Rend’s approved installer Jordaya Contracting Ltd, installed 1800m2 of 160mm EPS insulation as part of the Silkolitt insulated render system. Silkolitt is a lightweight, thin coat system ideally suited to both new build and existing structures. The system comprises insulation slabs which are mechanically fixed direct to the substrate. In addition to the Expanded Polystyrene specified for Bletchley Leisure, Silkolitt can also be used with Mineral Wool which is non-combustible or natural Cork for environmentally sensitive applications. The system is BBA Approved and fully warranted with a life expectancy in excess of 30 years.
The insulation was finished with Alumasc’s Silkolitt 1.5mm silicone render in blue and white to achieve an attractive ‘rolled’ effect finish. Alumasc Facades by K Rend’s silicone renders are available in a wide range of textures and colours, all of which are fully weather resistant and vapour permeable whilst offering excellent durability.
Commenting on the project, Paul Sanders of Milton Keynes Council, said: “As a leading and expanding ‘New City’, we see sustainability measures as vital to developing successful communities and facilities. Achieving BREEAM Excellent was absolutely central to our requirements for the new leisure centre. This has provided a significant reduction in running costs.”
The Main Contractor at Bletchley Leisure Centre was SDC Construction.
