The Silkolitt Lite external wall insulation system from Alumasc Facades by K Rend has played an important role in the creation of a landmark development in the centre of Basingstoke.
Developed by Barratt Southern Counties, the project represents a major change in direction away from the distinctive land-use zoning that typified the original ‘new town’ expansion.
Designed to meet the needs of modern city living, Crown Heights benefits from a mix of new apartments, leisure and retail space encircling a new urban plaza, all within minutes from Basingstoke station. Situated on the site of a former 13 storey Government office block, the development comprises two crescent buildings, split around the plaza area. Striking blue and yellow four storey blocks are situated in the southern sector, rising to 14 storeys in the northern area.
Designed by B3 Burgess and built by Ardmore Construction, Crown Heights is fitted with Silkolitt Lite, incorporating 80mm EPS insulation to meet current building regulation U-value requirements. To formulate the Ashlar groove design feature, channels were cut into the insulation and then pre-moulded glass-fibre scrim was applied. 1.5mm Silkolitt through-coloured silicone render achieved the distinctive, contemporary finish the architects required.
Due to the extremely tight build programme required for Crown Heights and limited available site storage, the Silkolitt Lite system was the perfect choice due to Alumasc Facades by K Rend’s UK manufacturing and distribution base. Developed primarily for new build projects, Silkolitt’s speed and ease of installation makes it perfect for such fast-track schemes. The insulation – which can be either EPS or mineral wool – is fixed directly onto the substrate with mechanical fixings and adhesives. Silkolitt Lite also offers building owners and users significant long-term benefits. It provides a completely watertight exterior which is weather resistant and requires minimal maintenance. Further advantages include high levels of thermal performance and enhanced acoustic properties.
The Silkolitt Lite system was installed by Alumasc Facades by K Rend A-TEAM registered contractor, SERS (London) Ltd.
